In an interview with Industrial Safety Review, Biman Banerjee, Senior Manager- Branded Sales, Mallcom (India) Ltd. tells us all about the credentials and offerings of this PPE major and its preeminence in a highly competitive service sector like safety and security. Excerpts:

Q. Can you provide a brief overview of your company’s history and how it became a global leader on Personal Protective Equipment?

Mallcom (India) Limited has been manufacturing, exporting and distributing a wide range of head-to-toe protection equipment (PPE) since 1983.

With a goal to provide workforce the world over with superior products at the most competitive prices, our products are designed with the finest materials and crafted with attention–to–detail. Our clients’ trust and satisfaction are our greatest profits; and when it comes to the business of serving our clients to the best of our abilities, we hold on an essential tenet that we are a ‘No Compromise’ Company.

Q. Your product range is extensive, covering head, ear , eye , hands and feet protection . How do you ensure each product meets the specific needs of different industries such as aerospace, aviation, agriculture, and construction?

Each of these industry verticals has hazards and risks of their own and they have to be tackled based on the user’s need for providing the right PPE. So, if need be, customization is the key to provide the best-in-class PPE’s, ensuring the safety of the users.

Q. Your products carry various accreditations. Could you elaborate on the importance of these certifications and how they contribute to your company’s reputation for quality and safety?

PPE certification helps businesses in conforming to regulatory requirements and avoiding legal liabilities. It also increases product marketability and client confidence in our product lines. Certification also ensures that items are suitable for usage. It also increases company’s credibility, thereby benefitting exports from increased international commerce.

Q. Innovation is the key in the PPE industry. How does your company approach R&D to stay ahead of the curve and evolve industry standards?

The design of PPE products today evolves from OEM’s like Mallcom who ensure to go into details. We as an integrated manufacturer of PPE, use insights from key customers, deep domain knowledge and expertise on work- place hazards, thereby co–design solutions with users from start to finish.

Q. With exports to 50 countries, what strategies have been most effective in expanding your global foot print and maintaining consistency in product quality across different markets?

Mallcom has always focused on innovation and customer feedback to tailor products to the need of the customer.

Using this approach, Mallcom as a PPE manufacturer, have gained the expertise to understand product features users wish to see in all the countries where we have set our foot and have always strived to deliver solutions that go beyond client expectations.

Q. Can you share some examples of how your products are tailored to meet the unique challenges of specific industries such as biotechnology, chemicals, or automobile and ancillary ?

While tackling heat resistance along with cut resistance as a hazard, we have developed gloves which meet the highest level of cut protection as well as the ability to withstand heat.

In the chemical industry, we have developed gloves which are chemical resistant as well as cut resistant.

In the automobile sector, we have offered solutions for working in confined areas where Helmets are a challenge. We have offered the Buyer with our Bump Cap range.

These are some of the examples of tailored products to meet the unique challenges of different industries.

Q. Sustainability is becoming increasingly important in manufacturing. How is your company addressing environmental concerns in the production and distribution of your PPE products?

Sustainability and safety of the planet is at the forefront of Mallcom’s vision of the future. Several of our plants run on renewables produced within the facilities. Bio-heating systems are used in manufacturing nitrile gloves.

Solar panels contribute 25% of renewable energy in our shoe manufacturing units.

Besides, Clean Ganga project is a CSR initiative taken up by Mallcom.

Q. How do you gather and incorporate customer feedback into your product development and improvement processes?

As a successful PPE manufacturer, Mallcom obtains customer feedback at various check points in the design process to ensure products fit, feel and look good .

Q. What are some of the biggest challenges your company faces in the PPE industry, and how do you overcome them?

Spurious products are abundant in the market. This is a big problem faced by successful brands like Mallcom – our Tiger safety shoes for instance. We are on the vigil to nab such counterfeits. We have taken legal actions also in certain cases. Attrition rate in the marketing function is also a challenge often faced by us.

Q. What are your company’s future thrusts for growth and innovation? Are there any upcoming products or projects you are particularly excited about?

The company focus in the international markets is to reach out to unchartered CIS countries and the African continent. Also there is a major thrust in the South Asia region in terms of product presence.

Yes, there are some exciting projects which are in the pipeline, but we are not in a position to divulge further details as on date.
